Google is expanding its wearable lineup with the Fitbit Edge, a new fitness tracker that combines a larger display, automatic workout recognition, advanced health sensors, and up to seven days of battery life in a slim design. Announced today, October 12, 2026, the device is designed for people who want more health and fitness features than a basic activity band without committing to a full-fledged smartwatch.

The Fitbit Edge also introduces a more capable on-wrist software experience, bringing workout metrics, health information, notifications, Google Maps, and media controls to a compact wearable. Google is positioning it between the screenless Fitbit Air and its more feature-packed Pixel Watch lineup.

The Fitbit Edge is available to preorder for $179.99 through the Google Store and retail partners in the US, with retail availability scheduled to begin October 27. Google is also including three months of Google Health Premium with a purchase, giving buyers an introduction to its personalized health coaching and other subscription features.

A bigger display in a slimmer design

The Fitbit Edge features a Hybrid OLED display that Google says offers 46% more viewing area than previous Fitbit trackers. The screen is designed to remain readable in direct sunlight, while glanceable tiles and customizable watch faces make it easier to check everyday information without navigating through multiple menus.

The tracker measures 11.5mm thick, and Google says its case is 45% lighter than that of the Apple Watch Series 12. Its curved profile is designed to sit comfortably on the wrist throughout the day and night, including while sleeping.

A redesigned physical side button provides tactile feedback and offers quick access to controls such as the workout pause screen. The interface also builds on the experience introduced with the Pixel Watch 5, placing essential information such as steps, weather, heart rate, sleep data, and cycle tracking within easy reach.

Beyond fitness tracking, the Edge supports Google Maps, media controls, and call and message notifications. It is not simply a band that records activity in the background; Google is giving it enough everyday functionality to serve as a lightweight alternative to a smartwatch.

Automatic tracking recognizes up to 100 workouts

Fitness tracking is central to the Fitbit Edge, with support for more than 50 exercise modes that users can start directly from the device. Depending on the workout, the tracker can display real-time guidance and relevant metrics, including pace targets for running, heart rate zones for high-intensity interval training, and split times for track workouts.

Built-in GPS allows users to record outdoor routes without carrying a phone. Google claims the system delivers up to 40% better tracking accuracy than previous generations, while an integrated altimeter measures elevation changes during activities such as hill sprints and stair workouts.

The Edge can also automatically recognize and categorize up to 100 workouts, including outdoor runs, rides, and walks. That should make activity tracking more convenient for people who occasionally forget to start a session manually.

There is an important distinction between the two workout figures: the tracker supports more than 50 exercise modes that users can launch themselves, while automatic recognition can identify up to 100 workout types.

Deeper health insights with Health Guardian

The Fitbit Edge adds a broader collection of health-monitoring tools, including continuous optical heart rate tracking, an on-wrist ECG app for heart rhythm assessments, and a dedicated skin temperature sensor.

These sensors work alongside sleep-stage analysis and heart rate variability (HRV) measurements to provide overnight recovery scores. The idea is to help users understand not only how much activity they complete, but also how their bodies respond to exercise and recover between sessions.

The tracker also supports Google’s Health Guardian features, which monitor wellness patterns such as blood pressure trends, insulin resistance trends, and high or low heart rate alerts. With Google Health Premium, the Health Coach can help users interpret changes in those patterns, adjust fitness plans, and prepare for conversations with healthcare professionals.

However, these features have important limitations. Blood pressure and insulin resistance trends are intended for general wellness, not diagnosis or treatment. They do not provide real-time clinical measurements and should not be used to adjust medication or replace medical advice. Availability also varies by country and device, and some features require a separate subscription.

Up to seven days of battery life

Battery life is another major selling point. Google rates the Fitbit Edge for up to seven days on a single charge, allowing users to track daytime workouts and overnight sleep without needing to recharge every evening.

When the battery is running low, five minutes of charging can provide up to a full day of battery life, according to Google. That fast-charging claim is based on using the included USB-C charging cable with a compatible 30W power adapter, which is sold separately.

As with most battery estimates, actual results will vary depending on settings, usage, environmental conditions, and the features enabled. Google says its maximum battery-life figure is based on testing preproduction hardware and software with default settings and a usage profile that includes features available in Battery Saver mode.

The Edge is also designed for durability, with a recycled-aluminum housing and water resistance rated to 50 meters. More notably, Google describes it as its first repairable fitness tracker, with an internal modular design and a replaceable battery intended to extend the device’s useful life.

That repairability claim could matter to buyers who would rather keep a wearable for several years than replace the entire device when its battery begins to deteriorate. The announcement does not, however, establish repair pricing or the availability of replacement batteries and other components.

Four finishes and a Stephen Curry edition

Google is offering the standard Fitbit Edge in four finishes, each paired with an Active Band:

  • Obsidian: Matte Black case.
  • Fog: Polished Silver case.
  • Olive: Satin Pyrite case.
  • Canyon: Warm Gold case.

Interchangeable accessories include an Active Sport band, a Performance Loop band with micro-adjustment, a Magnet band, and a Metal Links band. Google lists the accessories separately, so buyers should check which band is included with their selected configuration.

There is also a Stephen Curry Special Edition Fitbit Edge, developed with the four-time NBA champion and Google’s performance adviser. It features rye tones and game-day orange, along with a water-repellent, moisture-wicking design.

The Stephen Curry edition costs $219.99, or $40 more than the standard model. Google has not detailed every difference in hardware or software between the two editions in its announcement, so the premium appears to be primarily associated with the special-edition design rather than a confirmed upgrade in tracking capabilities.

Price, availability, and phone compatibility

The standard Google Fitbit Edge costs $179.99 and is available to preorder through the Google Store and retail partners. Google says retail sales begin October 27, 2026. The Stephen Curry Special Edition costs $219.99.

The tracker works with most phones running Android 11 or later and iPhones running iOS 16.4 or later. A Google Account, the Google Health app, and an internet connection are required. Some features need a separate Google Health Premium subscription, although purchasers receive three months of Premium with the Edge.

Google has not specified a single worldwide availability schedule in the announcement, and Health Guardian features vary by country. Buyers outside the US should check their local Google Store or retailer for regional pricing and availability.

The Fitbit Edge gives Google a middle ground between a minimal fitness band and a full smartwatch. Its combination of a larger screen, extensive automatic workout recognition, built-in GPS, and weeklong battery rating makes it a more capable option for people focused on health and exercise rather than a large collection of smartwatch apps.

Whether it is worth the $179.99 price will depend on how much users value those features and Google’s subscription-based health coaching. But the repairable design, replaceable battery, and emphasis on extended wear make the Edge more than a routine refresh: Google is trying to build a fitness tracker that people can use throughout the day without having to think about it too much.
