Google Sheets adds a manual mode for complex spreadsheets

In a world of Gemini-powered spreadsheets, Google Sheets just added a button that basically says: not yet.

Google Sheets is getting a new setting that lets users manually control when formulas recalculate. And honestly, in 2026, there is something wonderfully ironic about this announcement.

We have Gemini inside Sheets helping troubleshoot formula errors, generate content, analyze data and work with increasingly complicated spreadsheets. Google is also pushing Gemini deeper into Workspace. And now Sheets is basically saying: “You know what? Maybe we should just stop calculating things for a minute.”

The new manual calculation setting gives users control over when formulas and other references update. Instead of recalculating the entire spreadsheet after every change, users can pause automatic recalculation, make a batch of edits and then trigger a sheet-wide update when they’re ready to see the results.

And, to be fair, this actually makes a lot of sense for people working with enormous, complicated spreadsheets.

Imagine a workbook packed with formulas, cross-sheet lookups and aggregations. Changing one cell can trigger a chain reaction of calculations across the entire file. If you’re pasting or modifying a large block of data, watching Sheets repeatedly recalculate after every little change isn’t exactly the definition of a smooth workflow.

Manual calculation lets you make those changes first and calculate everything once at the end.

It’s also useful for financial models and forecasting. If you’re changing several assumptions, you can update each variable without constantly recalculating the model after every adjustment. Once all the inputs are in place, you can recalculate and see the complete scenario.

There’s another interesting use case: volatile functions.

Functions that generate random values or rely on constantly changing information, such as timestamps, can cause spreadsheet data to change when calculations run. Manual calculation can effectively let users freeze the current state while they’re working with or presenting the data.

So yes, the joke is that Google is giving us more control over something computers have been doing automatically for decades. But for users dealing with seriously complicated Sheets, that control can be surprisingly useful.

The setting is off by default. Users can enable it from File > Settings > Calculation Settings in Google Sheets. There is no administrator control for the feature.

Google says the rollout began on September 21 and can take up to 15 days to reach users. The feature is available to all Google Workspace customers and Workspace Individual subscribers.

And yes, the timing makes the whole thing a little funnier. Google is simultaneously making Gemini increasingly capable inside Sheets, including a feature that can diagnose and fix formula errors, while also giving spreadsheet veterans a big red-ish conceptual button that says: No. Don’t calculate that yet.

Sometimes the most advanced spreadsheet feature is apparently telling the spreadsheet to calm down.
