Google is turning Android from a regular smartphone operating system into something closer to an always-on personal sidekick, and it is calling that vision Gemini Intelligence. Instead of just waiting for you to open apps and tap around, Android is starting to quietly handle chores in the background, react to what is on your screen and even reshape its own interface around what you care about most.
At its Android Show 2026 event, Google framed Gemini Intelligence as the “best of Gemini” bundled into “advanced” Android devices – think the latest Pixel and Samsung Galaxy phones first, followed by watches, cars, glasses and laptops later this year. In practice, it is less a single feature and more a label for a wave of agentic AI tools: automation across apps, a smarter Chrome, upgraded voice typing, AI-built widgets and a refreshed visual design that leans into Google’s Material 3 Expressive language.
If you strip away the branding, the idea is simple: your phone should understand enough about what you are doing – and what is on your screen – to handle multi-step tasks for you, but only when you explicitly ask and only with your approval at the end. That “in control” message shows up over and over again in Google’s materials, clearly a response to growing skepticism about how much power people are willing to hand to AI assistants living inside their most personal device.
The most obvious place where this shows up is app automation. Gemini Intelligence builds on earlier experiments on the Galaxy S26 and Pixel 10, where Google had quietly been fine-tuning multi-step flows in popular food delivery and rideshare apps. Now, those same patterns are being expanded and branded: you can ask your phone to grab a front-row spot in your spin class, dig up a syllabus buried in Gmail and toss the required books into your shopping cart, all as a single instruction. Instead of you jumping between apps, copying text and tapping through confirmation screens, Gemini does the legwork, with progress updates arriving via Android’s notification shade while you get on with your day.
What makes this feel different from classic “assistant” actions is the way Gemini uses what is on your screen or in your camera as context. Google is emphasizing “screen and image context” as a core capability: long-press the power button while looking at a grocery list in your notes app and you can simply ask Gemini to build a shopping cart with every item ready for delivery. Snap a quick photo of a tour brochure in a hotel lobby and say “Find a tour like this on Expedia for a group of six,” and Gemini will do the hunting in the background using that photo as the starting point. It is Android’s long-promised “understand what I am actually looking at” moment, finally tied directly to actions rather than just search results.
All of this raises predictable questions about privacy, which Google is trying to preempt with a separate security and privacy explainer for Gemini Intelligence. The company says everything is grounded in three principles: explicit user control, comprehensive data protection and operational transparency. That means the AI should not act until you ask, should need your confirmation before making purchases on your behalf, and should keep clear logs and notifications so you can see what it is doing and where your data is going. Google also stresses that connecting Gemini to features like Autofill is strictly opt-in and can be turned off again in settings, a design that is clearly trying to balance “do more for you” with “do not creep you out.”

Chrome on Android is also getting swept into this Gemini Intelligence push. Starting later this summer, Gemini in Chrome will help you research, summarize and compare content as you browse, essentially acting as a layer between you and the open web. One of the most practical examples is Chrome’s “auto browse” features: rather than manually picking through pages to book an appointment or reserve a parking spot, you can delegate that job to Gemini, which will click through the necessary flows on your behalf while you review the final result. It is not hard to imagine this extending to things like returning items, managing subscriptions or filling in repeated forms that currently chew up way too much time on a phone.
Speaking of forms, Gemini Intelligence is also evolving plain old Autofill into something more, tying it into what Google calls Personal Intelligence. Today, Autofill mostly handles simple things like email, address and credit card fields; with Gemini Intelligence, Android will start using relevant information from your connected apps to fill out more complex forms on both apps and Chrome. In theory, that could mean your device knows which passport number, loyalty ID or student account to drop into the right spot without you digging through screenshots or password managers. Again, Google is making a point of saying this is opt-in: you choose if and when to connect Gemini to Autofill, and you can disable that connection whenever you like in settings.
One of the more human touches in this rollout is Rambler, a new Gemini Intelligence feature inside Gboard that targets a very specific pain point. Dictation on phones is already pretty good, but it is still fundamentally literal: it tries to transcribe every “um,” “like” and half-finished sentence that slips out when you are talking. Rambler takes a different approach. You talk the way you normally would – messy, repetitive, full of corrections – and Gemini distills that stream of speech into a cleaner, concise text message or email that better matches how you actually want to write. Importantly, Google notes that Rambler will clearly show when it is enabled, and that your audio is only used to transcribe in real time, not stored, which is likely meant to reassure anyone already uneasy about having their spoken thoughts routed through a large model.
Rambler also leans hard into multilingual realities. Powered by a Gemini model that can handle multiple languages in a single prompt, it is designed to handle code-switching on the fly – for example, switching between English and Hindi in one message without losing track of meaning or tone. That is a subtle shift, but for anyone who mixes languages in daily conversation, it could make voice input feel less like wrestling with a rigid tool and more like talking to someone who actually understands how you speak.
Another pillar in Gemini Intelligence is what Google is calling “generative UI,” and its first concrete expression is a feature named Create My Widget. Android has long been proud of its widgets, but they have traditionally been designed by app developers and shipped as static templates. With Create My Widget, you can instead describe what you want in natural language – “Suggest three high-protein meal prep recipes every week,” for example – and Gemini will generate an entirely custom widget that pulls data from the web and your Google apps to keep that little dashboard alive.
This kind of “vibe-coded” widget, as one TechCrunch piece put it, lets you get quite specific. Cyclists can ask for a widget that surfaces only wind speed and rain chances, runners might ask for a marathon countdown combined with recommended training runs, and busy parents could request a tile that merges calendar events with travel times. The same concept extends to Wear OS tiles on smartwatches, where space is even more constrained, making the idea of “exactly the information you care about, generated on demand” even more compelling.
Underneath all these features is a visual refresh meant to make Android feel calmer, clearer and more purposeful while all this intelligence hums in the background. Gemini Intelligence arrives with a design language that builds on Material 3 Expressive, which adds more animation, depth and personality to Android’s interface. Google’s pitch is that these are not just cosmetic flourishes: animations are meant to guide your attention rather than distract it, while layout and color adapt to put the most relevant, personalized information front and center. In other words, the UI itself becomes another surface where Gemini Intelligence shows up, not just a static frame around AI features.
Rollout-wise, Google is starting small but ambitious. The first wave of Gemini Intelligence features will land this summer on the latest Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel devices, which have the hardware and on-device AI engines to support this more intensive processing. Later in the year, the company plans to extend these capabilities to a broader set of Android form factors: watches running Wear OS, cars via Android Auto, mixed reality or XR devices, smart glasses and a new category of Gemini-centric laptops Google is calling Googlebooks. The longer-term vision is that the same AI that understands your calendar on your phone can help draft replies in your car or surface the right files on a laptop without you doing the usual search-and-tap routine across devices.
None of this will land without scrutiny. Privacy advocates are already paying close attention to any system that “deeply understands your context” and can carry out actions on your behalf, even with safeguards and consent flows in place. Regular users may also wonder how much they want their phones acting like an agent, even a polite one, versus the more predictable tap-and-swipe model they are used to. And there is a practical question: will people trust Gemini Intelligence enough to hand over tasks that actually matter – booking travel, handling money, managing sensitive emails – or will it end up stuck doing low-stakes chores like ordering groceries and reserving workout classes?
What is clear is that Google is betting heavily that the next phase of Android will be defined less by version numbers and more by this layer of intelligence sitting on top of everything. Gemini Intelligence is the name it is giving that layer, but the real test will be whether it feels like a genuinely helpful co-pilot or just another bundle of AI tricks waiting behind a settings toggle. As the first features roll out to Pixels and Galaxies this summer, we will start to see whether Android’s shift from operating system to “intelligence system” actually changes how people use their phones day to day – or if it ends up being one more futuristic promise fighting for space on an already crowded home screen.
