If you’ve ever scrambled to grab your phone and fire up Shazam before a chorus ends, ChatGPT just made your life a little easier. Thanks to a new integration, Apple-owned Shazam now lives directly inside ChatGPT, so you can identify songs without ever leaving the chat window.
Here’s how it works in practice. While you’re chatting, you can type something like “Shazam, what is this song?” and ChatGPT will pop up a “Tap to Shazam” interface right inside the conversation. Once you tap it, ChatGPT listens to the audio around you, hands that snippet off to Shazam’s recognition system, and then returns the result inline: song title, artist name, album artwork, and usually a quick preview you can play right there. It behaves almost exactly like using Shazam on an iPhone or Android phone, just wrapped inside a chat instead of a separate app.
You don’t need the standalone Shazam app installed for any of this to work, which is a big part of the appeal. The integration is treated as a ChatGPT “app,” so you add it from the Apps section in ChatGPT settings, search for Shazam, connect it, and you’re done. From then on, you can invoke it with a trigger like “Shazam …” or by tagging it with @Shazam, depending on how you’ve set things up. On iOS, Android, and the web, the experience is broadly the same: the model pauses, listens, then responds with the match inline with the rest of your conversation.
If you are a heavy Shazam user, there’s a nice bonus. When you do have the Shazam app installed, songs you identify via ChatGPT can sync back into your Shazam library, so your random café discoveries don’t just vanish when you close the chat. That means you can still go back later and scroll through your history, drop tracks into Apple Music or Spotify playlists, or just remind yourself what that one track from last weekend’s bar actually was. For many people, that library has become a kind of passive listening diary, and this integration keeps that habit going even if they primarily interact through ChatGPT now.
Under the hood, nothing radically new is happening to the core tech that powers Shazam, but it’s worth understanding why it’s such a good fit here. Shazam effectively “fingerprints” a short audio sample by converting it into the frequency domain, picking out high-intensity peaks in a spectrogram, and turning those into a compact signature. That fingerprint is then matched against a massive database of pre-computed fingerprints from millions of songs; when there’s a strong cluster of matching peaks at the same time offsets, it can confidently say “this is the track you’re hearing.” It’s fast, robust to noise, and works surprisingly well even with background chatter, which is exactly the kind of environment you’d expect when someone is quickly tapping “Shazam” in the middle of a chat.
What’s new here is less the algorithm and more the context it now sits in. ChatGPT is already where you might be talking about music: asking for playlist ideas, looking up an artist’s backstory, or trying to find similar songs to something you heard on the radio. With the Shazam integration, identification becomes just one more tool in that conversational workflow. You can imagine the flow: you’re in a cafe, you trigger Shazam in ChatGPT, get the track, then immediately ask, “Give me five similar songs and build a chill playlist around this vibe,” all without switching apps. Some implementations also allow ChatGPT to remember your musical preferences over time (via a toggle that lets it reference previous music-related chats), so that follow-up recommendations can lean more into what you actually like, not just what’s statistically related.
There’s also a strategic story here for Apple. Shazam has been part of Apple’s ecosystem for years now—Apple acquired the company in a roughly $400 million deal that was framed as a way to boost Apple Music and strengthen its data and algorithmic chops. Since then, Apple has integrated Shazam directly into Siri and Control Center, and even made the standalone app ad-free after the acquisition, positioning it as a clean, frictionless utility rather than an ad-driven service. Letting Shazam sit inside ChatGPT extends that reach into one of the most widely used AI products in the world, putting Apple’s music recognition tech in front of people who might not be deep into Apple’s ecosystem at all.
At the same time, this is a smart move for OpenAI and ChatGPT. Music is inherently social and contextual, and adding native song recognition makes ChatGPT feel a bit more anchored in the real world. Instead of being just a text box that knows about music in the abstract, it can now “hear” what you’re listening to, label it, and then use that as a jumping-off point for recommendations, trivia, translations of lyrics, or even deeper analysis of genres and trends. OpenAI has been steadily expanding ChatGPT’s capabilities with integrations like this and interactive tools for things like math and data visualization, and Shazam fits right into that pattern of making the chatbot more multimodal and utility-focused.
For everyday users, though, this will likely come down to convenience. If you’re someone who lives inside ChatGPT at work or while browsing on your phone, not having to jump out to a separate Shazam app is one fewer context switch. It’s easy to imagine music fans using this while reading reviews, hanging out on social media, or even watching livestreams on another device—ChatGPT sits open in a tab, and whenever something catches your ear, you call on Shazam from the same place you’re already typing. Critics will rightly point out that launching the Shazam app or using the Shazam control in iOS is already pretty quick, and for some people, that muscle memory will be hard to beat. But for others, especially those using ChatGPT as a kind of always-open assistant, having music recognition right there in the flow of conversation will feel natural almost immediately.
The bigger question is what’s next. Now that ChatGPT can identify songs, the obvious follow-ups are deeper integrations with streaming services, smarter playlist building based on your Shazam history, and richer cross-device experiences—hear a song on your TV, tag it with ChatGPT on your phone, and have it ready in your music library on your laptop by the time you get home. Apple, meanwhile, gets to quietly extend Shazam’s footprint beyond the traditional Apple bubble, which may pay off later in the form of more Apple Music subscribers or simply more data and mindshare in the music discovery space. In the short term, though, this is all about shaving a few seconds off that “what song is this?” moment—and making sure the answer lives in the same place you’re already talking, searching, and planning.
