The cinematic adaptation of the acclaimed Broadway musical “Wicked” has transitioned from the big screen to the comfort of your home. After its theatrical release on November 22, 2024, the film became available for digital streaming on December 31, 2024.

How to watch “Wicked“

You can rent or purchase “Wicked” through Amazon Prime Video. Rentals are priced at $19.99, granting you 30 days to begin watching and 48 hours to finish once started. Purchasing the film costs $29.99, allowing unlimited viewing. Both options are available in UHD, HD, or SD formats.

Notably, an Amazon Prime membership is not required to rent or buy movies on Prime Video; all customers can access titles via the Prime Video Store. However, a Prime membership offers additional benefits, including access to exclusive original series, documentaries, live sporting events, and more. An Amazon Prime membership costs $14.99 per month or $139 annually. Amazon also offers discounted memberships through Prime Access—aimed at those benefiting from certain government assistance programs—and Prime for Young Adults, for those enrolled in higher education. Eligible non-Prime members can also try a free trial, which includes access to the service for a limited time before you start paying.

Directed by Jon M. Chu, “Wicked” delves into the untold story of the witches of Oz, featuring Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda. The film has garnered critical acclaim, including a Golden Globe nomination for both lead actresses.

Special screenings have been organized for fans eager to sing along, enhancing the communal viewing experience.

But the excitement doesn’t stop there. A sequel, Wicked: For Good, has already been announced and is slated for release on November 21, 2025. This follow-up will continue to explore the untold stories of Elphaba and Glinda, bringing more drama, dazzling visuals, and spellbinding music to fans worldwide.

What we know about the sequel

Director Jon M. Chu confirmed that Wicked: For Good will delve deeper into the origins of Oz’s iconic characters, including the darker challenges Elphaba faces as the Wicked Witch of the West. This second chapter is set to feature even more breathtaking visuals and intricate storytelling, promising to expand the world of Oz in ways fans have only dreamed of.

Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande will reprise their roles as Elphaba and Glinda, ensuring continuity in the heart of the story. Meanwhile, new cast members and surprises are expected to be revealed in the coming months, keeping fans eagerly anticipating every announcement.

The decision to split Wicked into two films was met with initial skepticism, but Chu explained that the richness of the source material required additional time to do justice to the narrative. “We didn’t want to compromise the emotional depth and the journey of these characters,” Chu said in an interview.

For fans, this means a chance to savor even more of their favorite moments from the musical while enjoying new content created specifically for the cinematic adaptation. If the first film’s glowing reviews are anything to go by, the sequel is poised to be just as groundbreaking.

As you gear up for Wicked: For Good, consider revisiting the original Broadway cast recording or rewatching the 2024 film to immerse yourself in the world of Oz. Fans can also explore behind-the-scenes footage, which offers insight into how the movie’s magical sets and costumes were brought to life.

Special-edition merchandise, including Wicked-themed collectibles and apparel, is also available on the official Universal Pictures website. Additionally, several streaming platforms feature documentaries and interviews about the making of Wicked, perfect for those who want to dive deeper into the film’s production.

Whether you’re a longtime Wicked enthusiast or a newcomer curious about the buzz, there’s never been a better time to explore the magic of Oz. With Wicked now streaming and a sequel on the horizon, this is the perfect opportunity to experience (or re-experience) a story that has captured hearts for decades.
