On the right is a Status preview showing a woman in a yellow top hugging a young girl with dark hair at what appears to be a celebration with decorative banners. The image includes WhatsApp branding with text bubbles saying "Add music" and "to your Status" with decorative green and pink squiggles around the edges.

Remember the days when your AIM profile felt naked without a snippet of your favorite song? Or when your MySpace page wasn’t complete until you’d picked the perfect track to blast every time someone visited? Well, dust off those nostalgic vibes because WhatsApp is bringing that energy back. The messaging app, which boasts over 2 billion users worldwide, has just rolled out a new feature that lets you add music to your status updates. It’s a modern twist on an old-school internet classic, and it’s about to make your WhatsApp game a whole lot more fun.

So, what’s the deal with this new feature? If you’ve ever used WhatsApp’s status tab—where you can post text, photos, or videos that vanish after 24 hours, much like Instagram Stories—you’re already halfway there. Now, when you go to create a status, you’ll spot a little music note icon at the top of the screen. Tap it, and you’re in: a library with millions of songs, ready for you to pick from.

Here’s how:

  • Photos: You can add up to 15 seconds of music.
  • Videos: You’ve got up to 60 seconds to play with.

And it’s not just about picking a song and calling it a day. WhatsApp lets you slide along the track and choose the exact part you want—whether it’s the chorus that’s been stuck in your head or a killer beat drop you want to flex. Want to share a pic of your morning coffee with a chill acoustic vibe? Done. How about a video of your weekend hike with an epic adventure anthem? You got it. It’s all about setting the mood.

How it works (and why it’s so easy)

Using it is a breeze. Fire up the updates tab, pick your photo or video, and tap that music note. From there, you can search for a song—anything from the latest chart-toppers to that obscure indie track you’ve been gatekeeping. Once you’ve found it, tweak the clip to your liking, hit post, and boom: your status is live, complete with a soundtrack. Your friends can tap to watch and listen, getting a little slice of your world in the process.

It’s the kind of feature that makes you wonder why it took so long to get here. Imagine posting a rainy-day selfie with a snippet of Billie Eilish’s latest, or a clip of your dog chasing its tail with some goofy ’80s pop in the background. It’s a small tweak that adds a big dose of personality to what you share.

There’s something undeniably nostalgic about this update, and that’s no coincidence. Back in the early 2000s, platforms like AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) and MySpace ruled the internet, and music was a core part of how we showed off who we were. Your AIM away message wasn’t just a status—it was a mini diary, often paired with angsty lyrics from Dashboard Confessional or a cryptic line from The Killers. On MySpace, your profile song was practically your digital handshake, announcing your vibe to anyone who stopped by.

WhatsApp’s new feature feels like a love letter to those days. It’s not about building an entire online persona anymore—social media’s moved on from that—but it is about injecting a bit of that old-school creativity into today’s fast-paced feeds. And it’s not just WhatsApp jumping on the bandwagon. Instagram’s had music in Stories for years, and TikTok’s entire empire is built on pairing visuals with sound. Clearly, we still love a good tune to go with our posts.

Privacy? still WhatsApp’s thing

Now, before you start worrying about WhatsApp snooping on your music taste, let’s clear the air. Status updates, including the music you tack on, are end-to-end encrypted—just like your chats. That means WhatsApp can’t see what you’re sharing, and they won’t know if you’re still blasting “Sweet Caroline” unironically. Your friends might judge you when they see your status, sure, but Meta’s not in on the joke. It’s a nice reassurance, especially in an era where privacy feels like a rare commodity online.

Why music, why now?

So why’s WhatsApp adding this now? For one, it’s a no-brainer evolution. Social media thrives on engagement, and music’s a proven way to keep people hooked. Just look at TikTok—its meteoric rise owes a lot to how seamlessly it weaves songs into every video. WhatsApp isn’t trying to compete with that (it’s still a messaging app at heart), but it is giving users a reason to play with statuses more often.

It also fits into Meta’s bigger playbook. With Instagram and Facebook already rocking similar features, adding music to WhatsApp creates a familiar vibe across all three platforms. It’s a subtle way to keep you in the Meta ecosystem, hopping from app to app without missing a beat.

But beyond the strategy, there’s a simpler truth: music just makes things better. It’s universal, emotional, and personal. Pairing it with a status update turns a fleeting post into something that sticks with people—a little window into your day, your mood, your you.

What’s next?

The feature’s still fresh, so it’ll be interesting to see how people run with it. Will we get viral status challenges, like those 15-second lip-sync clips that took over Instagram? Or maybe a wave of throwback jams as millennials relive their MySpace glory days? Whatever happens, it’s a safe bet that your WhatsApp contacts list is about to get a lot more musical.

For now, it’s worth firing up the app and giving it a spin. Dig through that music library, find a track that feels like you, and let your status sing. Maybe go for something trendy to flex your cool factor, or lean into the nostalgia with a classic from your teenage years. (No one’s stopping you from picking that Fall Out Boy song you swore you’d outgrow.)

With this update, WhatsApp isn’t just keeping up with the times—it’s reaching back to remind us of a quirkier, more personal internet. It’s a small feature, sure, but it’s got a big heart. In a world of endless notifications and algorithm-driven feeds, there’s something refreshing about picking a song, pairing it with a moment, and sharing it with your crew. So go ahead, queue up that perfect track, and let your status do the talking. The early 2000s called—they’re proud of you.
