Get ready to express yourself in a whole new way on WhatsApp. The messaging giant seems to be cooking up a new feature that utilizes the power of artificial intelligence to create personalized avatars for its users. Spotted by WABetaInfo in the latest WhatsApp Beta for Android (version 2.24.14.7), this feature promises to take your profile picture to a whole new level.
Imagine portraying yourself lounging in a lush forest or floating through the cosmos – all within your WhatsApp chats! This in-development feature leverages a combination of your selfies, text descriptions, and Meta‘s AI Llama model to generate unique avatars that reflect your likeness in any setting you can dream up.
Based on the screenshot shared by WABetaInfo, the generated avatars seem to be in line with what we’ve seen from other AI image generators like Lensa AI or Snapchat‘s “Dreams” selfie filter. So, expect a creative and artistic take on your digital persona.

Creating your personalized avatar is a simple process. You’ll first need to take a few selfies, which will then be used by Meta AI to learn your facial features and overall look. Once the training is complete, you can unleash your imagination! To generate your avatar in a specific setting, simply type “Imagine me” followed by the desired location within your Meta AI chat. Alternatively, you can use the “@Meta AI imagine me…” command in any WhatsApp conversation to conjure up your AI doppelganger.
Keeping user privacy in mind, WhatsApp is making this feature entirely optional. Users will have to manually enable it within the app’s settings before they can start creating their personalized avatars. Additionally, WABetaInfo assures us that the reference photos used for training can be deleted at any time through the Meta AI settings.
While the exact release date for this “Imagine AI selfie” feature remains a mystery, it seems we might have to wait a bit longer. WhatsApp is currently focused on rolling out its Meta AI chatbot and real-time AI image generation features, particularly in the US. This cautious approach by Meta is understandable, considering the potential challenges associated with generative AI tools. After all, they want to ensure a smooth and secure experience for their users.
