The era of vast storage capacity is upon us, as Western Digital has unveiled its latest innovation: a full-size SD card with a whopping 4TB of storage. This new SanDisk Extreme Pro 4TB SD card is designed to cater to the needs of high-end cameras and laptops, marking a significant milestone in the history of SD cards.

At the NAB Show last week, Western Digital showcased this remarkable product, which is set to be available in 2025. The card utilizes the Ultra High Speed-I (UHS-I) interface, supporting data transfer rates of up to 104MB/s in the UHS104 (SDR104) mode. Furthermore, it boasts minimal sequential write speeds of 30MB/s, making it suitable for 8K video recording.

The Secure Digital Ultra Capacity (SDUC) card specifications were first announced by the SD Association in 2018, with the promise of SD cards holding up to 128 terabytes of storage. Although the 4TB capacity is a significant leap forward, it’s worth noting that Western Digital has not disclosed the type of NAND inside the upcoming card. This means that even higher capacities may still be a few years away.

Despite the wait, this new 4TB UHS-I SD card is expected to be a game-changer for those seeking to record beyond 4K resolution with ample storage space. However, the price point remains a mystery. Given that the 1TB versions of the same card retail for around $139.99, it’s reasonable to assume that the 4TB version could cost upwards of $600.

Western Digital’s 4TB SD card is a testament to the relentless pursuit of innovation in the tech industry. While it may be a year or two before it hits the market, the prospect of recording high-resolution videos with such vast storage capacity is undoubtedly an exciting development for photographers, videographers, and tech enthusiasts alike.
