X (formerly Twitter) is working on a new weapon in the fight against spam, and it might change how you reply to posts. The news dropped thanks to Nima Owji, a detective who sniffs out unreleased X features for fun. Owji found evidence (reported by Engadget) of a possible “Disable Links in Replies” option. This basically lets you turn on a forcefield that blocks people from pasting links in their comments on your posts.
Apparently, this feature is legit. Christopher Stanley, X’s security boss, even chimed in on another post, saying, “My team built this.” X already cracks down on spammers who bombard you with unwanted messages and mentions. They also have rules against shady links that could steal your info or mess up your device. Think malware and phishing scams – yuck!
Right now, throwing a website link into your X post or reply is as easy as copy and paste. The platform even throws in a little preview with the webpage title, pretty neat.
So, what’s the catch with this link-blocking feature? Well, it could be a lifesaver if you’re tired of trolls spamming your comments or folks hawking unrelated products. But here’s the flip side: it might also stop people from sharing helpful links, like corrections to a post or info to debunk fake news. Luckily, X’s “Community Notes” feature is still there for those fact-checking warriors.
The release date for this feature is still a mystery, but keep an eye out! It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out in the fight against online gunk.
