In a recent interview at Vox’s Code Conference, X CEO Linda Yaccarino faced a rather uncomfortable moment as she grappled with essential details about the company she’s been leading since June. The conversation, moderated by CNBC correspondent Julia Boorstin, shed light on Yaccarino’s apparent knowledge gaps.
Adding to the tension, former Twitter executive Yoel Roth had taken the same stage just an hour earlier and delivered a scathing critique of Elon Musk, which appeared to set the stage for Yaccarino’s less-than-smooth performance. Yaccarino made her disapproval known, seemingly caught off guard by the lineup, stating, “I work at X. He worked at Twitter.”
Despite this rocky start, Yaccarino attempted to highlight X’s positive trajectory, claiming that the company is on track to achieve profitability by early 2024. She also boasted about the return of 90% of the major advertisers who had abandoned the platform during Musk’s takeover. However, her confidence waned when pressed for specifics.
When questioned about the exact number of daily active users, Yaccarino struggled to provide a precise figure, facing the reality that downloads and usage were on the decline. She also seemed uncertain about Musk’s plans to introduce a monthly fee for X users, leaving the impression that the decision might not be finalized.
Amid suggestions that she may serve as CEO in name only, with Musk still wielding significant influence over key product decisions, Yaccarino responded with a somewhat awkward defense, stating, “Who wouldn’t want Elon Musk sitting by their side?” Although her remark wasn’t intended to be humorous, it did manage to elicit some laughter from the audience.
In a candid interview where Yaccarino’s knowledge gaps were on full display, it remains to be seen how these revelations will impact her leadership at X moving forward.
