TikTok, the popular short-form vertical video platform, is now encouraging its creators to turn their phones sideways and produce videos over a minute long.
Creators @candicedchap and @kenlyealtumbiz revealed seeing an in-app prompt from TikTok stating it will “boost” horizontal videos over 60 seconds in length within 72 hours of posting. The boost is eligible for creators active for more than 3 months, as long as videos comply with content policies.
This update marks TikTok’s continual shift into YouTube‘s territory of 10+ minute videos optimized for monetization and retaining viewers. TikTok already expanded videos to 15 minutes and is testing 30-minute uploads.
It also follows the launch of TikTok’s paywalled Series feature for videos up to 20 minutes long. This allows creators to charge subscribers $1 to $190 for exclusive video collections.
The option for longer horizontal videos may incentivize creators to repurpose existing YouTube content. However, YouTube still offers superior monetization. YouTube has also added more TikTok-style features recently.
The longer, horizontal videos could boost time spent watching TikTok, especially on larger screens like the redesigned iPad app. However, they diverge from the short, vertical videos commonly associated with the platform.
