Popular short-form video app TikTok is evolving to better accommodate users on larger tablets and foldable devices. The company announced updates allowing the app to format appropriately whether holding the device in portrait or landscape mode.
Most notably, TikTok now positions any overlaid text, captions, or stickers to the side rather than having them cover the video when viewing on a wider screen. This keeps the video content clean and visually centered.
The timing contrasts unfavorably with parent company Meta‘s Instagram app, which has faced ongoing criticism for lack of iPad optimization. While TikTok adapts to emerging screen technologies, Instagram still does not offer a true native iPad app for Apple‘s tablet users.
As video consumption and content creation shift steadily toward mobile, TikTok’s development team appears ahead of the curve. The updates bring convenience for a growing number of users touting larger portable screens. Instagram may need to step up its efforts to satisfy its tablet-carrying audience.
