Threads is making a much-requested change that gives users more control over how they interact with the platform. As of late November 2024, Meta began testing a feature that allows users to choose their default feed—whether that’s the “For You” feed, which is driven by algorithms, the “Following” feed, or even a custom feed created by the user.
This change comes after a year of users asking for more flexibility, especially with the dominant “For You” feed, which has often been criticized for showing too much-unrelated content. The custom feed option could be a game-changer for users looking to curate their content experience more precisely.
The process to choose your default feed is fairly simple for those in the test group: all you need to do is tap and hold on any feed at the top of the app and select “Edit feeds.” From there, you can reorder them and set the one you prefer as your default.

This feature isn’t the only change happening at Threads. Meta is also rolling out updates to the For You feed, making it more focused on content from accounts you follow rather than random suggestions. Additionally, competition from platforms like Bluesky appears to have fueled a series of improvements in Threads, including a revamped search function and even support for landscape video.
It seems Meta is taking a page from the playbook of its competitors, showing how competition can drive innovation and improvement, which is always a win for users. Hopefully, this test will expand to all users soon.
