According to internal communications, The Times has rolled out an internal AI tool named Echo, which is set to help summarize articles, briefings, and various company activities. The editorial guidelines are clear: AI is a helper, not a creator. In a memo from May 2024 outlining its generative AI principles, The Times stated, “Generative A.I. can sometimes help with parts of our process, but the work should always be managed by and accountable to journalists.” This cautious approach is designed to ensure that every piece of news retains the credibility and depth that The Times is known for.
Journalists are being encouraged to use AI for tasks such as developing news quizzes, designing quote cards, generating FAQs, and even suggesting interview questions. However, there are firm boundaries. The guidelines strictly prohibit using AI to bypass paywalls, incorporate third-party copyrighted materials without permission, or publish AI-generated images or videos without explicit labeling. The aim is to prevent any erosion of journalistic integrity while still taking advantage of AI’s potential to make everyday tasks more efficient.
This technological upgrade comes at a time when The New York Times is entangled in a legal dispute with OpenAI and Microsoft. The newspaper alleges that ChatGPT was trained on its content without proper authorization—a claim that adds another layer of complexity to the discussion around AI in journalism.
