A screenshot of The Electric State trailer for Netflix. A large, yellow, humanoid robot is partially submerged in a river, surrounded by numerous small figures that appear to be soldiers. The robot has a spherical head with visible wear and damage. The scene is set in an urban area with old buildings and temples in the background. The robot's arms are extended, and its hands are resting on the riverbed, creating splashes in the water. The soldiers are scattered around the robot, both in the water and on the riverbanks, suggesting a confrontation or a rescue operation. The overall atmosphere is chaotic and dramatic.

Netflix has just dropped the highly anticipated first trailer for The Electric State, a post-apocalyptic road movie brought to life by the Russo Brothers, known for their work on Avengers: Endgame and the cult classic Community. This film is based on Simon Stålenhag‘s striking 2018 graphic novel, and it transports us to a retro-futuristic version of the 1990s after a robot uprising.

The story centers around Michelle, an orphaned teenager played by the ever-talented Millie Bobby Brown. She embarks on a journey across the desolate landscapes of the United States in search of her younger brother, teaming up with a quirky smuggler portrayed by Chris Pratt, who rocks a classic mustache, and a couple of eccentric robots along the way.

Visually, The Electric State is a feast for the eyes, capturing the essence of Stålenhag’s stunning artwork. The retro-futuristic vibe is evident in the design of the oversized VR helmets that our characters wear, harkening back to the technological dreams of the ’90s. The robots, particularly the one that accompanies Michelle, boast a playful, cartoon-inspired look that could easily fit into a world like Fallout. In a standout moment from the trailer, a massive teddy bear robot joins a parade of machines, while our heroes seem to confront a giant robot that has an uncanny resemblance to Sonic the Hedgehog—definitely a memorable visual!

As with many modern movie trailers, it seems that the trend of slowed-down covers of popular songs might be reaching its saturation point. This time, the melancholic rendition of Oasis’ “Champagne Supernova” plays in the background, adding a layer of nostalgia but also making some viewers wonder if we’ve seen this creative choice a few too many times.

The film boasts an impressive ensemble cast that goes beyond just Brown and Pratt. Joining them are fan-favorites like Ke Huy Quan, Jason Alexander, Woody Harrelson, Anthony Mackie, Brian Cox, Jenny Slate, Giancarlo Esposito, and Stanley Tucci. With such a talented lineup, there’s plenty of reason to be excited about how these characters will bring this compelling narrative to life.

Mark your calendars—The Electric State is set to hit Netflix on March 14, and it’s shaping up to be one of the must-watch films of the early 2024 lineup. With its blend of heartfelt storytelling, visually striking designs, and a star-studded cast, it promises to deliver a unique cinematic experience. So, whether you’re a fan of the Russo Brothers or just looking for your next binge-watch, this film might just be the perfect addition to your watchlist!
