For Tesla owners, the dream of controlling their electric vehicles from the convenience of their wrist might soon become a reality. In a compelling exchange on social media, Elon Musk himself hinted that an official Tesla app for the Apple Watch could be in the works.

The spark that ignited this potential development was a simple question posed to the Tesla CEO by a hopeful customer. “not sure why the car can’t be unlocked using an Apple Watch or other smart watch. any chance this could be incorporated @elonmusk?” the query read. Musk’s response was as succinct as it was promising: “Sure.”

While this single-word affirmation may not seem like much, it carries significant weight coming from the visionary at the helm of the world’s most valuable automaker. However, it’s important to note that Musk’s reply doesn’t provide any specific timeline or details regarding the potential Apple Watch integration.

For Tesla owners who have long coveted the ability to manage their vehicles from their wrists, this news is a beacon of hope. The convenience of an Apple Watch app would allow them to unlock their cars, precondition the cabin temperature, enable or disable sentry mode, and even remotely start their vehicles – all from the convenience of their wrists.

While Tesla has remained tight-lipped about the specifics of such an app, the company’s loyal following has been vocal about their desires. Requests for features like live charging progress updates and the ability to use the Apple Watch as a digital key have been echoing through Tesla’s customer base for years.

In the absence of an official Tesla app for the Apple Watch, enterprising developers have stepped up to fill the void. A handful of third-party apps, such as Tessie and Stats, have emerged on the App Store, offering varying degrees of Tesla control and monitoring capabilities for Apple Watch users.

Tesla’s potential embrace of the Apple Watch could also be a strategic move to keep pace with its electric vehicle rivals. Rivian, for instance, introduced support for Apple Watch Live Activities last month, allowing owners to track their vehicle’s charging progress in real-time. The company had also teased plans for an “Apple Watch as a key” feature last year.

Should Tesla follow through on Musk’s suggestion, the introduction of an Apple Watch app could represent a significant milestone in the company’s ongoing efforts to expand and enhance its technological ecosystem. By seamlessly integrating with one of the world’s most popular wearable devices, Tesla would be taking another step towards solidifying its position as a leader in the electric vehicle and technology industries.
