T-Mobile has finalized its acquisition of Mint Mobile, the wireless carrier co-owned by actor Ryan Reynolds. This move, announced last March with approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in April, marks T-Mobile’s strategic re-entry into the prepaid phone market, a space it departed after the sale of Boost Mobile.
Despite the change in ownership, Mint Mobile will maintain its signature plan offering: $15 per month for 5GB of data, with the requirement of paying for three months upfront. This familiar plan will now come with added benefits, including access to select T-Mobile perks that are set to roll out in the coming months.
The acquisition extends beyond Mint Mobile alone. T-Mobile has also taken over Ka’ena Corporation, Mint Mobile’s parent company, along with its affiliated brands: Ultra Mobile, a prepaid service provider, and Plum, a wholesale wireless provider. This means that customers of Mint Mobile and Ultra Mobile will gain access to T-Mobile’s scam call screening service.
Also, Mint Mobile and Ultra Mobile users will now enjoy free roaming in Canada, offering unlimited talk and text alongside 3GB of data. Ultra Mobile customers will further benefit from an improved data roaming feature when traveling in Mexico.
As part of the acquisition, Mint Mobile’s founders, David Glickman and Rizwan Kassim, will join T-Mobile’s team to play key roles in steering the Mint Mobile and Ultra Mobile brands forward. Notably, Ryan Reynolds will continue his role as Mint Mobile’s ambassador, maintaining the brand’s distinctive personality.
