Steam’s built-in game recording feature is now available to all users, marking the end of its beta phase. The tool is integrated into the Steam client, allowing PC, Mac, and Steam Deck players to capture, edit, and share their gaming highlights easily. It’s a move aimed at simplifying how gamers document their in-game moments—whether they’re triumphs, funny glitches, or new achievements.

Before this update, players had to rely on third-party tools like Xbox Game Bar, NVIDIA GeForce Experience, or AMD‘s Adrenalin software to record gameplay. Now, Steam offers its own solution, with the added benefit of being directly within the Steam ecosystem. The new recording feature works with any game that supports Steam Overlay, including non-Steam titles, and even integrates with features like automatic markers to highlight significant gameplay events like boss fights or achievements.

The Steam Game Recording tool is versatile, offering two main recording modes: background and on-demand. The background mode continuously records your gameplay until you hit a preset limit for time or storage, allowing you to capture moments retroactively. The on-demand mode, activated with a keystroke (Ctrl + F11 by default), gives players the freedom to start and stop recordings whenever they choose. Once captured, users can edit their clips directly in Steam, cropping and trimming to their liking.

Additionally, Valve has fine-tuned the recording options with several quality settings—ranging from low to ultra—based on the game’s resolution. The latest updates also added export options, game-specific settings, and a new Session View to help users manage their footage more effectively.

This update is part of a broader client refresh, which also removes support for older operating systems like Windows 7, Windows 8, and certain versions of macOS. So, if you’re on one of those platforms, it’s time to consider upgrading.
