On May 3rd, Star Wars fans old and new will have the chance to experience Episode I – The Phantom Menace on the big screen once again. As part of the celebration of the film’s 25th anniversary this year, Disney and Lucasfilm are bringing back the 1999 sci-fi epic for a limited theatrical run.
Directed by franchise creator George Lucas, The Phantom Menace kickstarted the Star Wars prequel trilogy when it first arrived in theaters in 1999. With fan-favorite characters like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda making their first appearances, as well as one of cinema’s most iconic villains, Darth Maul, the film left an indelible impact on pop culture.
In addition to the theatrical re-release, Disney is also commissioning new artwork to commemorate the occasion. Renowned poster artist Matt Furgeson has been hired to create a special 25th anniversary poster.
This blast from the past comes at an opportune time, as the prequel era has seen renewed interest thanks to several new Disney+ streaming series like Obi-Wan Kenobi and The Bad Batch. Hayden Christensen, who portrayed Anakin Skywalker in Episodes II and III, told Empire magazine that getting to revisit his character in Obi-Wan was “a very heartwarming experience.”
So whether you’re a die-hard fan eager to watch young Anakin win the Boonta Eve Classic podrace again, or a newcomer excited to meet Jar Jar Binks for the first time, The Phantom Menace‘s big screen return promises to be a special Star Wars event.

In Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, Jedi apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi and his master Qui-Gon Jinn rescue Queen Amidala from Naboo’s invasion. They meet a young slave named Anakin who has an unusual connection to the Force. Anakin wins a Podrace, gaining his freedom and becoming a Jedi. They return to Naboo to face a massive invasion where they encounter Darth Maul and the Sith.
