Spotify is considering expanding its usage of short video clips to more parts of its app. This potential move was brought to light through a recent test discovered by Music Ally, a music industry publication. The test displayed short video clips on playlist pages, enabling users to swipe through a vertical feed containing videos lasting less than 30 seconds each.
The inception of video clips on Spotify began last year as a means for artists to engage with fans and promote their music. Initially, these clips were limited to artist profiles, album pages, and album countdown pages. However, recent findings suggest an evolution in this strategy. Music Ally identified video clips emerging prominently at the top of Spotify’s “Pop Drive” playlist, offering users a curated selection of brief videos featuring artists such as Sabrina Carpenter and Benson Boone.
Spotify’s CEO, Daniel Ek, hinted at the potential expansion of video clips during an earnings call last month. Ek cryptically stated, “You’re going to see music clips in a bigger way.”
Notably, Spotify has been actively enhancing the tools available to artists for promoting their music and facilitating discovery by fans. This initiative gains significance in light of recent disputes involving TikTok and Universal Music Group. Amidst these developments, Spotify has introduced music videos and extended its collaboration with Universal Music Group, allowing artists to preview upcoming songs through the platform.
