Spotify has announced a reversal of its controversial decision to restrict access to song lyrics to Premium subscribers. Following widespread backlash against the move, the company will now make lyrics available to all users at no cost.
The streaming platform had initially introduced a limited free lyric viewership in September 2023, before expanding the paywall to a larger user base in May. This strategy aimed to incentivize users to upgrade to the Premium tier.
However, the decision proved unpopular, with many users expressing their frustration with the change. In response to the negative feedback, Spotify has opted to reinstate free access to lyrics for all users.
A spokesperson for the company confirmed that the change will be implemented globally in the coming weeks.
While Spotify has not publicly disclosed the specific reasons for the reversal, it is clear that the company has responded to significant user dissatisfaction. This decision underscores the importance of considering user sentiment when implementing changes to popular platforms.
