Sony is gearing up to introduce a new “PS5 Pro Enhanced” label for games that take advantage of the upcoming PlayStation 5 Pro‘s enhanced capabilities, according to documents obtained by InsiderGaming. This label could be a game-changer for PlayStation gamers, promising a new level of visual fidelity and performance.
To earn the coveted “PS5 Pro Enhanced” badge, games will reportedly need to offer a dedicated PS5 Pro graphics mode. This mode will unlock a host of cutting-edge features, including PSSR for upscaling to 4K, a consistent 60fps framerate, and added or improved ray-tracing capabilities.
Ray-tracing, a computationally intensive rendering technique that simulates the behavior of light in real-time, has been a hallmark of the current generation of consoles. However, its implementation has often come at the cost of reduced framerates or lower resolutions. With the PS5 Pro’s increased horsepower, developers could potentially deliver ray-traced visuals without compromising on performance.
The “PS5 Pro Enhanced” label will also indicate higher resolutions for both fixed and variable refresh rate games, ensuring that players with compatible displays can enjoy the full benefits of their hardware.
This labeling system is reminiscent of the “PS4 Pro Enhanced” label from the previous generation, which signaled games that had been optimized for the more powerful PlayStation 4 Pro. However, unlike its predecessor, the “PS5 Pro Enhanced” label will provide a more precise indication of the specific enhancements players can expect, such as constant 60fps framerates and ray-tracing support.
According to InsiderGaming, the “PS5 Pro Enhanced” label will internally be known as “Trinity Enhanced,” drawing a parallel to the “X|S” label used by Microsoft to denote games with enhancements for the Xbox Series X and Series S consoles.
Rumors surrounding the PS5 Pro suggest that the console could launch as early as the end of 2024, approximately a year after Sony released a slimmer version of the base PS5 model in November 2023. Compared to the original PS5, the Pro variant is expected to offer up to four times the ray-tracing performance, a 10 percent higher-clocked CPU, 28 percent faster memory, and up to a 45 percent improvement in rendering performance.
