Sony has just made a significant announcement, introducing new models of their PlayStation 5 console, which many are already dubbing the “PS5 Slim.” These sleek additions to the PlayStation family maintain the same impressive performance capabilities under the hood but come in a more compact form factor, complete with a detachable disc drive and a 1TB SSD. What’s most intriguing is that the detachable drive feature allows gamers to opt for the Digital Edition initially and then later attach the drive as an optional modular accessory, priced at $79.99 / €119.99 / £99.99.
In their official blog post, Sony shared their motivation behind this innovation, stating, “To address the evolving needs of players, our engineering and design teams collaborated on a new form factor that provides greater choice and flexibility. The same technology features that make PS5 the best to play are packed into a smaller form factor, along with an attachable Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive and a 1TB SSD for more internal storage.“
The new PS5 model boasts a 30 percent reduction in volume, making it notably smaller, and it’s also 18 percent lighter than the original model. The design features four cover panels, with a glossy top and matte sides. Sony is including a horizontal stand with both models, while a separate vertical stand, “compatible with all PS5 models,” will be available for purchase at $29.99 / €29.99 / £24.99.
However, the flexibility of buying now and adding a drive later comes at a slightly higher entry cost. The Digital Edition is priced at $449.99 / €449.99 / £389.99, whereas the model with the Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc drive will set you back $499.99 / €549.99 / £479.99. These new PS5 models are set to start shipping in November, initially available in the US, Europe, and the UK through select retailers. Sony has also mentioned that once the existing PS5 model stock is depleted, it will be discontinued. Gamers now have more choices and flexibility when it comes to their PlayStation gaming experience.
