Snap, the popular social media platform known for its ephemeral messaging and augmented reality features, has announced plans to add watermarks to AI-generated images created using its tools. The watermark, which is a translucent version of the Snap logo with a sparkle emoji, will be added to any AI-generated image exported from the app or saved to the camera roll.

The company stated that removing the watermark from images would be a violation of its terms of use. However, it remains unclear how Snap will detect the removal of these watermarks, as the company has not yet provided further details.

Snap is not the only tech giant taking steps to label or identify images created with AI-powered tools. Microsoft, Meta, and Google have also implemented similar measures to ensure transparency and safety.

Snap’s AI-powered features, such as Lenses, are already marked with a visual marker that resembles a sparkle emoji. The company has also added context cards to AI-generated images created with tools like Dream to provide users with more information.

In addition to these safety measures, Snap has partnered with HackerOne to adopt a bug bounty program aimed at stress-testing its AI image-generation tools. This partnership is part of Snap’s ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and transparency of its AI-powered features.

The move to add watermarks to AI-generated images is just the latest in a series of steps taken by Snap to ensure the safety and transparency of its platform. By providing users with clear information about the origin of AI-generated images, Snap hopes to promote a safer and more transparent social media experience.
