As streaming services continue to jack up their prices, 2025 is shaping up to be another year where consumers feel the pinch. Amid this landscape of ever-increasing costs, Sling TV has announced a feature update that might just offer some relief: the introduction of unlimited DVR capabilities.

According to a recent press release from Sling TV, the service has now ditched the previous cap on its DVR recordings. “Unlimited DVR (previously called DVR Plus) will allow customers to record as much content as they want, with recordings saved for up to nine months,” the company stated. This upgrade does come at a cost, though—an additional $5 per month. This is in contrast to competitors like YouTube TV, which includes unlimited DVR in its base package, although at a higher subscription price.

Here’s a breakdown of what the unlimited DVR offers:

  • Unlimited DVR: Record without restrictions, whether it’s a single show or an entire season.
  • Exclusively on Sling: Replay top sports, TV shows and movies – even if you forget to record.
  • Ad-skipping freedom: Fast-forward through commercials or pause and rewind at your convenience.
  • Cloud-based convenience: No need for physical hardware—Sling’s Unlimited DVR is fully cloud-powered.
  • Cross-device accessibility: Watch your recordings on any Sling-supported device.

However, like many deals in the digital world, there are nuances to consider. Sling TV offers several DVR options tailored to different user needs and subscription levels:

  • Freestream DVR: Comes at no extra cost, providing 10 hours of storage with a 30-day retention period. It’s part of Sling’s free ad-supported TV service (FAST), which doesn’t require a paid subscription.
  • DVR free: Included in the base subscription, offering 50 hours of storage with a nine-month retention period, also at no additional charge.
  • Unlimited DVR: The premium add-on for $5 monthly, providing vast storage without limits for nine months.

Sling TV’s pricing adjustments didn’t stop there. At the end of 2024, the company increased the cost of its basic plans, with both Sling Blue and Orange now at $45.99 per month, and the combined package at $61. This price hike was accompanied by the introduction of an arcade gaming feature, which, while innovative, might leave some subscribers scratching their heads about its relevance to their viewing needs.

The move towards unlimited DVR storage by Sling TV can be seen as a strategic play to keep users engaged in a competitive market. However, the extra charge for this feature might make some consumers reconsider their loyalty, especially when other services offer similar perks within their standard packages. This decision reflects the ongoing balancing act streaming services perform between adding value and managing costs, all while keeping an eye on customer retention and satisfaction.
