Google has introduced a groundbreaking safety feature, Satellite SOS, to its Pixel 9 series. This innovative technology allows users to connect with emergency services via satellite, even in areas with no cellular coverage.
How it works
When a Pixel 9 user is in an emergency situation without cellular connectivity, Satellite SOS enables them to contact emergency services through a satellite link. The feature provides the user’s location and allows for basic text communication with emergency responders.

Device compatibility and availability
Currently, Satellite SOS is exclusive to the Pixel 9 series (Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold) and is available in the United States (excluding Hawaii and Alaska). Google has indicated that the service will be free for the first two years after device activation but has not disclosed pricing details beyond that period.
Here’s how to use Satellite SOS on your Google Pixel phones

- Connection and response times vary based on location, site conditions, and other factors.
- Once you’re connected, the emergency service provider should reply via text within a few minutes.

It’s essential to note that Satellite SOS requires Google Messages as the default messaging app.
Limitations and considerations
While Satellite SOS is a significant advancement in emergency communication, it’s important to understand its limitations. Satellite connections can be slower than cellular networks, and response times may vary based on factors such as location and weather conditions. Additionally, the feature is currently limited to the United States.
Google’s introduction of Satellite SOS marks a significant step forward in smartphone emergency capabilities. By providing a means of communication in remote or disaster-stricken areas, this technology has the potential to save lives.
