Samsung has just unveiled its latest addition to the foldable lineup, the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition, which brings a few key upgrades over the standard model. This new version, initially limited to South Korea, focuses on refinement rather than revolutionary changes, offering a thinner and slightly lighter design. It’s being priced at around 2,789,600 KRW (approximately $2,000), with availability beginning October 25th, 2024.
What’s new? The Galaxy Z Fold SE is just 10.6mm thick when folded, shaving off 1.5mm from its predecessor, and weighs 236 grams, about 3 grams lighter than the Z Fold6. Samsung has upgraded its wide-angle camera to a whopping 200MP, a significant jump from the standard 50MP sensor, offering sharper photos. The memory has been bumped up to 16GB as standard, and both the inner (8 inches) and outer (6.5 inches) displays are slightly larger, giving users more screen real estate in both modes.

While these improvements make the Special Edition a compelling upgrade, it’s clear that Samsung is sticking closely to its proven formula for foldables. Despite the camera and memory boosts, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor and much of the core functionality remain the same as the standard model. It’s also worth noting that this phone will come with One UI 6.1.1 based on Android 14 pre-installed and is expected to receive seven major Android updates.
For fans of Samsung’s foldables, especially those in South Korea or China, the Galaxy Z Fold SE could be the sleekest, most feature-packed foldable yet. However, given the limited availability and minimal upgrades compared to the Z Fold6, global fans might be disappointed to hear there are no plans for a broader release. Still, if you’re into premium foldables, this Special Edition is something to keep an eye on.
