We’re used to seeing sleek, stylish ads for Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip, targeting the trendy, selfie-loving Gen Z crowd. But in a surprising shift, the tech giant has now positioned its foldable phone as a crucial tool for law enforcement.
In a recent blog post, Samsung proudly announced that several police departments in Missouri have adopted the Z Flip as their new body camera. This marks a groundbreaking move, as it’s the first time a foldable device has been deployed for such a purpose.
The phones have undergone some modifications to suit the needs of officers. The volume button now instantly starts recording, and the device can automatically begin capturing footage during high-speed chases or when emergency lights are activated. Samsung collaborated with Visual Labs, a body camera specialist, to tailor the Z Flip for police use and ensure seamless cloud uploads of recorded footage.
Beyond body camera duties, the versatile phone can also double as a camera for crime scene photos, a voice recorder for witness interviews, and a GPS tracker for officer location. Samsung touts the device’s compact size and foldable design as ideal for easy attachment to uniforms.
This new marketing strategy is a departure from the norm for smartphone manufacturers. While companies like Axon and Motorola dominate the body camera market, Samsung is clearly aiming to carve out a niche for itself in this space. The company plans to expand this initiative to 25 police departments across five states.
It’s worth noting that body cameras have been hailed as a tool for increased police accountability and transparency. However, as reported by ProPublica and The New York Times, the effectiveness of these devices often hinges on local policies governing the release of footage.
