Samsung is shaking things up with its upcoming Galaxy Tab S10 series. Instead of the usual trio of base, plus, and ultra models, reports suggest the company will focus solely on the larger Plus and Ultra variants. This move comes as Samsung seeks to establish a new benchmark in the tablet market and counter Apple‘s recent launch of the iPad Pro with an OLED display.

According to industry insiders, Samsung is gearing up for mass production of the Galaxy Tab S10 Plus and Ultra by the end of July. Notably absent will be the standard model, a staple in previous Tab S iterations. Traditionally, Samsung offered a range of screen sizes to cater to different user preferences. However, the Tab S10 appears to be taking a different route.

This shift towards larger screens can be seen as a response to Apple’s foray into OLED displays with the 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro models launched in May. While Apple is a relative newcomer to OLED displays in tablets, Samsung has been utilizing this technology in its Galaxy Tab S series since 2014.

With Apple upping the display ante, Samsung seems to be differentiating itself by focusing on larger AMOLED screens – likely starting at 12 inches – and ditching the standard model altogether. This strategy positions the Tab S10 squarely in the premium, large-screen tablet segment.

Another reported change involves the processor powering the Tab S10. In a move that could signal a more diversified approach to chip suppliers, Samsung might utilize MediaTek chipsets alongside the usual Snapdragon processors. This could be a strategic response to rising Qualcomm chip prices, giving Samsung greater leverage in negotiations. MediaTek’s recent success, surpassing Qualcomm in smartphone application processor sales volume last year, makes them a compelling alternative.

Industry experts interpret this shift as a sign of Samsung’s mobile division adopting a more aggressive parts strategy, similar to Apple’s approach as a finished product company. This could pave the way for a more diversified supply chain for Samsung’s mobile devices in the future.
