Samsung unveils AI-powered Galaxy S24 lineup

During Samsung‘s Unpacked event, the company showcased its latest Galaxy S24 smartphone lineup, with a strong focus on artificial intelligence technology.

Dubbed Galaxy AI, the overarching name for the AI capabilities of the new phones, the system powers a range of communication-based features. Notably, Galaxy S24 models will offer real-time translation during phone calls without needing a separate translation app. Processing happens on the device itself using the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, keeping conversations private. Users can also fully disable any online processing of data for AI features if they wish.

Other translation features enabled by on-device processing include split-screen translations of in-person conversations using the Interpreter function. Transcripts can also be generated for recordings, summarized or translated into one of 13 languages.

When messaging, Samsung’s Chat Assist proposes appropriate tones for your texts. The Samsung Keyboard can translate between languages too. Note Assist in Samsung Notes helps with the summarization of documents, templates and covers.

For drivers, Android Auto can summarize incoming messages and recommend relevant actions like sharing your ETA. You simply approve suggestions via voice control.

A new search feature lets you draw a circle around items on the screen to see related Google search results and AI-generated overviews for context. The camera also leverages AI for digital zoom, low-light performance and more. Super HDR previews lifelike images before you take the shot.

Photo editing tools like suggested improvements, background fill and straightening leverage AI as well. The phones can even generate extra frames for smooth slow-motion video. Finally, HDR rendering applies to third-party apps like Instagram too.

Samsung’s major investment in on-device AI aims to compete with Pixel phones while improving efficiency, interactions and experiences across Galaxy devices. With the S24 lineup, generative AI clearly takes the main stage.
