Samsung has announced that its newly launched Galaxy S24 series smartphones will receive operating system and security updates for up to seven years, matching Google’s recent commitment for its Pixel devices.
The extended update program represents Samsung’s longest-ever pledge of software support and guarantees that S24 owners will continue receiving the latest Android versions and security patches through 2031.
The updated policy will cover at least 7 major Android versions for the S24 lineup. Samsung’s previous flagships, like last year’s S23 series, were guaranteed 4 major OS updates and 5 years of security patches.
Samsung said the 7-year commitment will start with 2024’s Galaxy S24 lineup, including the S24, S24 Plus and S24 Ultra.
In addition to bolstering device lifespan via steady updates, Samsung said it is also increasing sustainability with more recycled materials inside Galaxy phones. The S24 Ultra utilizes 50% recycled cobalt in its battery and 100% recycled rare earth elements in its speakers, both firsts for Samsung.
By extending software support for its premium handsets to 7 years, Samsung joins Google in offering the smartphone industry’s longest update policies. With phones lasting longer via updates, the company hopes to reduce electronic waste and build customer loyalty through an “optimized Galaxy experience” lasting nearly an entire decade.
