For anyone still rocking one of Samsung‘s Galaxy S20 phones from 2020, there’s good news on the software support front. While the flagship Galaxy S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra models are past Samsung’s promised timeline for receiving monthly security patches, the company hasn’t entirely abandoned them just yet.
Samsung has announced that it will be updating its S20 phones on a quarterly basis, which is good news for those still using this device. Although these phones will no longer receive monthly security updates, they will still receive critical patches and vulnerability fixes, but at a reduced frequency.
The decision extends the longevity of the S20 series, ensuring that even as these handsets age, their owners can continue using them without being overly exposed to emerging cybersecurity threats.
However, there is a lingering air of uncertainty around just how long Samsung plans to keep the software support train running for the S20 trio. With no definitive end date provided, owners of these phones find themselves in a perpetual waiting game, wondering when the last security patch might finally arrive.
It’s a slightly different story for the more affordable Galaxy S20 FE (Fan Edition), which launched alongside its pricier S20 siblings. This model is set to continue receiving monthly security updates for the time being, likely due to its slightly later release date. But even the FE’s future isn’t set in stone, with Samsung potentially shifting it to a quarterly update cadence or pulling the plug on support altogether once its four-year software commitment has been fulfilled.
For now, though, S20 owners can breathe a sigh of relief, secure in the knowledge that while their phones may be growing a little long in the tooth, Samsung hasn’t entirely forgotten about them.
