Samsung is gearing up for its next big software update, One UI 7, built on the upcoming Android 15. Leaks suggest this update will finally address a long-standing issue with widgets on Galaxy devices.
For those unfamiliar, widgets are mini-apps that live on your home screen, providing quick access to information and features from your favorite apps. However, there’s been a problem: on Android 14 (and the current One UI 6.0 and 6.1), closing an app doesn’t necessarily stop its widget from running in the background. This can lead to a situation where the widget isn’t working properly, but simply closing and reopening the app doesn’t fix it.
According to Google’s developer documentation for Android 15, things are set to change. When you close an app on Android 15, its associated widget will also be disabled. This means the widget will become greyed out and unusable. The upside? Reopening the app will automatically restart the widget, potentially fixing any glitches you were experiencing.
There’s a flip side to this new behavior, though. If you’re someone who likes to conserve battery by closing unused apps, you might find it inconvenient that the widgets won’t work anymore. This could be a dealbreaker for users who rely heavily on widgets for quick access to information without having the full app running in the background.
