Samsung today unveiled an updated version of its spherical home robot, Ballie, at CES 2024. The new Ballie features built-in projection capabilities that allow it to display videos, images, and other content on walls, floors, and ceilings as it autonomously rolls around users’ homes.
During a presentation at the Las Vegas tech show, Samsung showed a montage video that demonstrated Ballie’s new projection tricks. In the charming demo, Ballie followed people and pets around the home, projecting a bird video to entertain a dog, initiating a video call that took over an entire wall, and displaying workout instructions during an exercise session.
According to Samsung, Ballie can now automatically adjust image brightness and projection angle based on environmental factors like room lighting and viewers’ distance from the wall. The company claims it is “the world’s first projector to automatically detect people’s posture and facial angle.”
In addition to these projection talents, Ballie appears to retain all its original smart home hub capabilities. The video showed Ballie controlling appliances like lights and AC units, dispensing dog food, and text updates on its activities to homeowners. Samsung literature also promises support for “air conditioners, lights, laundry machines and more.”
While no official pricing or release timeline was given, the return of Ballie after its unveiling at CES 2020 indicates Samsung’s ongoing work on the product. The new projection feature and expanded smart controls also suggest the spherical robot is moving closer to being market-ready.
For now, the adorable demo video provides a glimpse of how Samsung envisions Ballie enhancing home life through a blend of automation, personality, and, now, projection.
