After years of playing catch-up, Samsung has unveiled its first-ever 1TB microSD cards. The tech giant has introduced the Pro Plus and EVO Plus models, both boasting impressive specs and a decade-long warranty. However, the question on everyone’s lips is: were they worth the wait?

While competitors have been offering 1TB microSD cards for some time, Samsung’s entry into the market is still significant. The company is banking on its reputation for quality and performance to sway consumers. The new cards leverage Samsung’s cutting-edge V-NAND technology, promising enhanced speed and capacity. This is particularly enticing for professionals like photographers and videographers who demand top-tier storage solutions.

The Pro Plus model is clearly geared towards demanding users, with blazing-fast transfer speeds and support for high-resolution video capture. The EVO Plus, on the other hand, caters to a broader audience with slightly lower performance but still respectable speeds. Both cards benefit from a new controller built on a smaller 28nm process, contributing to improved efficiency.

Durability is a crucial factor for any microSD card, and Samsung claims to have put its new offerings through rigorous testing, including exposure to extreme temperatures, water, X-rays, and magnetic fields. This is reassuring for those who often find themselves in challenging environments.

One of the most compelling use cases for a 1TB microSD card is gaming consoles, especially the Nintendo Switch. With the capacity to store up to 45 games (assume they’re 20GB each), the new Samsung cards could revolutionize the way gamers manage their libraries.

While the Pro Plus and EVO Plus undoubtedly offer impressive features, they come with a hefty price tag. Samsung’s 1TB options are significantly more expensive than competing models from brands like Silicon Power and Lexar.

  • Samsung microSD PRO Plus: 128GB to 1TB ($24.99 to $153.99)
  • Samsung microSD EVO Plus: 64GB to 1TB ($12.99 to $131.99)

Ultimately, the decision to choose a Samsung microSD card over cheaper alternatives boils down to individual priorities. If reliability, performance, and a long warranty are paramount, the Pro Plus or EVO Plus might be the right choice. However, for those on a budget, there are viable options from other manufacturers.
