Roku is set to broaden its sports content offerings with the launch of the Roku Sports channel on August 12. The new channel will aggregate a variety of free sports programming into a single, always-on destination.
The streaming device maker has been steadily building its sports portfolio, securing deals for MLB games, The Rich Eisen Show, and Formula E racing. However, the upcoming channel will primarily focus on complementary content, such as NBA G League games and original sports documentaries.
“A curated always-on channel that leads our viewer through the wide variety of premium sports content available for free on The Roku Channel, Roku Sports Channel is an exciting addition to our expanding sports offering,” said Joe Franzetta, Head of Sports, Roku Media. “We continue to see audiences enjoy the familiar, lean-back experience FAST offers, especially with sports. Sports is one of our most popular channel genres on The Roku Channel, which makes us so excited to make it even easier for audiences to jump into Roku’s standout programming.”
While the channel will not feature major professional sports leagues like the NFL, NBA, or NHL, it offers a valuable addition for fans seeking alternative sports programming. Roku’s existing NBA channel and MLB Zone will continue to operate separately.
The Roku Sports channel will be available at no additional cost to users in the United States on all Roku streaming devices and Roku TVs.
