Rivian, the ambitious electric vehicle maker, is set to receive a substantial boost from the state of Illinois. A whopping $827 million incentive package has been greenlit by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to aid in the expansion of Rivian’s factory in Normal, Illinois. This financial injection will support the development of Rivian’s anticipated next-generation electric vehicle, known as the R2.
The announcement, unveiled by Rivian on Thursday, outlines the allocation of funds towards crucial aspects of the project. Notably, the expansion will encompass enhancements to the existing factory infrastructure, the development of essential supporting facilities, and significant investments in job training programs aimed at upskilling the local workforce. This initiative is slated to kick off “in the coming months,” signaling an imminent phase of growth for Rivian.
This substantial funding milestone arrives on the heels of Rivian’s recent unveiling of the R2 SUV, a mid-size electric vehicle slated for release in 2026 with an estimated starting price of $45,000. Rivian’s strategic vision extends beyond the R2, with plans in motion for the R3 hatchback, which will also utilize the innovative EV platform that underpins the R2.
Interestingly, Rivian initially intended to manufacture the R2 at a brand-new $5 billion facility located in Georgia. However, plans pivoted following the March R2 event, opting instead to leverage its existing infrastructure in Illinois, where the company already produces the R1T pickup, R1S SUV, and commercial electric vans. This strategic realignment accelerates the R2’s production timeline and results in substantial cost savings exceeding $2 billion.
Rivian’s commitment to Georgia remains steadfast despite the change in plans, with potential incentives amounting to $1.5 billion awaiting should the company decide to establish operations there. This incentive package, marking Georgia’s largest to date, hinges on several key commitments from Rivian, including the creation of 7,500 jobs by 2028 with an average annual salary of $56,000, as well as the sustained maintenance of these positions through 2047.
However, Rivian’s journey hasn’t been without challenges, as evidenced by ongoing production struggles leading to a comparable output of electric vehicles this year compared to the previous year. These hurdles necessitated a reevaluation of future plans, prompting the strategic shift towards consolidating operations in Illinois to expedite R2’s market entry and optimize efficiency.
