Consumer electronics startup Rabbit has a hit on its hands with the launch of the R1, its pocket-sized artificial intelligence companion device. Just one day after unveiling the R1 at CES 2024, Rabbit announced on X/Twitter that it had already sold its entire first production run of 10,000 units.
“When we started building r1, we said internally that we’d be happy if we sold 500 devices on launch day,” the company posted. “In 24 hours, we already beat that by 20x!“
The R1 features a 2.88-inch touchscreen running Rabbit’s own Rabbit OS software. The device utilizes what Rabbit calls a “Large Action Model” — essentially advanced AI that allows the R1 to function as a universal controller for smartphone apps. Owners can use the R1 to play music, order groceries, send messages, and more without having to touch their phones. The R1 can also be trained to better interact with specific apps over time.
Even though the first production run is sold out, Rabbit is allowing customers to preorder the R1 on its website for expected delivery between April and May 2024. Anyone lucky enough to secure an order before the initial 10,000 units sold out can expect their R1 to ship as early as March.
It’s a hugely successful launch for the young startup, which internally had modest hopes of selling 500 units on launch day. Selling out 20 times that many suggest Rabbit may have a game-changing AI assistant on its hands — one that consumers literally can’t wait to get their hands on.
Update Jan. 12, 2024, 12:26 am ET: Rabbit has sold out its second batch of R1 devices and opened pre-orders for a third batch, expected to be delivered between May and June of 2024.
