The holiday season is creeping up, and with it comes the annual scramble for the perfect gift. While socks and coffee mugs have their charm, what about gifting something genuinely useful? In an age where we live our lives online, digital privacy has become a hot-button issue, and a subscription to a solid Virtual Private Network (VPN) is less of a niche tech toy and more of a digital seatbelt.

It’s the kind of practical gift that someone might never buy for themselves but will end up using every day. Of course, you might just be on the hunt for a great deal for yourself, and as Black Friday deals begin to flood the market, Proton VPN’s offer is a serious head-turner.

The Swiss-based privacy company is rolling out its Black Friday promotion, and it’s a big one. You can get two years of its high-tier “VPN Plus” service for $59.76. When you break that down, it works out to just $2.49 per month.

Compared to its standard monthly price of $9.99, that’s a 75 percent discount, saving you $180 over the 24-month period.

So, why bother with a VPN at all?

For many, the term “VPN” is something they’ve heard but aren’t quite sure about. In simple terms, a VPN creates a secure, encrypted “tunnel” for your internet traffic.

In a casual, day-to-day sense, this has three major benefits. First, it makes you practically invisible on public Wi-Fi. That coffee shop or airport network is a playground for data thieves, and a VPN shields your activity from prying eyes. Second, it stops your own Internet Service Provider (ISP) from tracking every site you visit. And third, it lets you (virtually) hop the globe, making it perfect for accessing your home streaming library when you’re traveling abroad.

But not all VPNs are created equal. This is where the “Proton” part of the deal becomes just as important as the “75% off” part.

Privacy you can actually verify

Proton’s entire brand is built on trust and transparency, and it goes to great lengths to back up its claims. This isn’t just another company plastering “no-logs policy” on its homepage and hoping you’ll take its word for it.

First, Proton is based in Switzerland. This is a crucial detail. Switzerland has some of the world’s strongest privacy laws and, most importantly, is not a member of the “5/9/14 Eyes” intelligence-sharing alliances. This means Proton is not legally obligated to retain user data, unlike companies based in many other countries.

Second, they prove it. Proton maintains a strict no-logs policy, meaning it doesn’t log your online activity or any identifiable data. And we know this because it submits itself to regular, independent audits. In August 2025, the European security firm Securitum completed its fourth consecutive annual audit of Proton’s no-logs policy, once again confirming its claims.

Finally, all its apps—for Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android—are 100% open source. This means anyone, from a curious coder to a dedicated security expert, can inspect the code to ensure it’s not doing anything shady. It’s a level of transparency that is still rare in the industry.

What the “Plus” plan actually gets you

This Black Friday deal is for the “VPN Plus” tier, which unlocks the full suite of features.

While Proton famously offers one of the best free plans on the market (with no data caps), it’s limited. The free plan only gives you access to servers in a handful of countries and can have slower speeds due to high demand.

The “Plus” tier is the full-fat experience. It gives you:

  • A massive network: Access to over 15,000 high-speed servers spread across more than 120 countries. This is what allows you to find a fast, uncongested connection and reliably unblock streaming services.
  • NetShield ad-blocker: This feature blocks ads, trackers, and even malware-hosting sites at the DNS level, before they even get a chance to load.
  • High-speed streaming & P2P: The Plus servers are optimized for streaming and fully support P2P file sharing.
  • Secure core: For the truly security-conscious, this feature routes your traffic through extra-hardened servers in privacy-friendly countries (like Switzerland or Iceland) before sending it to your final destination. It’s like a VPN for your VPN.
  • 10 simultaneous connections: You can protect up to 10 of your devices—laptops, phones, tablets, and even your router—all at the same time on a single account.

But is it fast?

All the privacy in the world doesn’t mean much if your connection slows to a crawl. This is another area where Proton shines. In extensive testing by tech publications like CNET and Engadget, Proton VPN Plus consistently ranks as one of the fastest VPNs available.

Recent tests show an average download speed loss of only about 12 to 16 percent. To put that in perspective, anything under 25 percent is considered “fast” by industry watchers. In real-world use, this tiny drop is unnoticeable. You’ll be able to stream 4K video, join video calls, and browse without any frustrating lag or buffering, all while your connection is fully encrypted.

For $2.49 a month, this deal isn’t just cheap; it’s genuine value. You’re getting a top-tier, independently verified, high-performance privacy tool for the price of a cup of coffee. As a gift for a loved one or a digital upgrade for yourself, it’s one of the more practical and high-value bargains to emerge this Black Friday season.
