Proton, the privacy-focused technology company, has unveiled a powerful new addition to its suite of software services: Pass Monitor. This advanced security suite, integrated into Proton Pass, the company’s end-to-end encrypted password manager, aims to provide a comprehensive layer of identity and credential protection for users.
Proton understands the significance of securing users’ online accounts and personal data in the constantly changing cybersecurity threat landscape. To address these concerns, the company has launched Pass Monitor, which features a four-layered approach to provide a strong defense against potential breaches and attacks.
“To keep you safe, we’re introducing Pass Monitor for our password manager, a new suite of security features to help you secure your data,” Proton stated. “Pass Monitor alerts you of account weaknesses and data breaches so you can better defend your online accounts against attacks. We believe security should be easy, so Pass Monitor watches out for you automatically and guides you through solutions in the event your data leaks from a third-party service.”
The four components of Pass Monitor’s protection are as follows:
- Dark Web Monitoring: Proton scans illicit data marketplaces on the dark web to check if users’ Proton addresses, email aliases, and up to 10 custom email addresses have been leaked. If any compromised data is found, users are immediately alerted, allowing them to take swift action to secure their accounts.
- Password Health: This feature acts as a checkup for account security, notifying users if they have any weak or reused passwords that need to be updated. Strong and unique passwords are essential for preventing unauthorized access.
- Inactive two-factor authentication: Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of security beyond a password, significantly reducing the risk of hackers breaking into accounts. Pass Monitor identifies accounts where users can enable 2FA, ensuring an additional barrier against potential breaches.
- Proton Sentinel: Proton’s Sentinel program, released last year, utilizes AI and human analysts to detect and block account takeover attacks. This feature has now been integrated into Pass Monitor, providing an extra line of defense.
Proton Pass is available for free and includes password health and 2FA checks, while the $1.99/month Proton Pass plan unlocks all four features of Pass Monitor. Additionally, the full Proton Pass and Pass Monitor features are included in the Proton Unlimited plans, which encompass all of the company’s services, starting from $7.99/month for a 2-year plan or $12.99/month for a monthly subscription.
