Patreon, the popular platform for supporting creators, is facing a significant challenge: the imposition of Apple‘s notorious 30% commission on in-app purchases. This means that starting November 4, 2024, any new Patreon membership purchased through the iOS app will be subject to this additional fee.
To soften the blow for creators, Patreon is offering the option to automatically increase subscription prices for iOS users. However, with the platform already charging its own fees, the added Apple tax is a substantial burden.
This development marks a significant shift in Patreon’s relationship with Apple. Until recently, the platform managed to circumvent the tech giant’s commission. However, the tide turned last year when Apple demanded Patreon integrate its in-app payment system.

The implications of this change are far-reaching. It could lead to higher subscription costs for patrons, reduced earnings for creators, and potentially drive more users towards Patreon’s website or Android app to avoid the extra fee.
As the tech industry continues to evolve, the battle between platforms and content creators is heating up. Patreon’s predicament highlights the immense power wielded by Apple and the challenges faced by those who rely on its ecosystem.
