WSJ: While Altman was in Vegas for an F1 event, OpenAI directors fired him without warning, claiming he hadn't been "candid"

Sam Altman was looking forward to a weekend of Formula One festivities in glittering Las Vegas last Friday. But just hours before the high-octane event kicked off, Altman received a startling Google Meet notification on his phone. Little did he know, he was about to experience the race of his life to regain control of OpenAI — the artificial intelligence lab he co-founded nearly a decade ago.

Altman hurriedly clicked on the notification, connecting him to a video call with OpenAI board members and chief scientist Ilya Sutskever. Without explanation, Sutskever tersely informed Altman that he was being removed from his position as CEO. Furthermore, the board would soon publicly announce his firing via a statement. Before Altman could respond or ask questions, the call ended abruptly. Seconds later, he was locked out of his company laptop and email.

Shockwaves erupted at OpenAI’s San Francisco headquarters as the vague statement went public, criticizing Altman for not being “consistently candid” with directors and hindering governance. The majority of staff revolted, threatening mass resignations unless Altman was reinstated. Interim CEO Mira Murati struggled to quell the uprising and retain talent.

Then, just 48 hours after the initial bombshell, former Twitch executive Emmett Shear was installed as Altman’s replacement. But the turmoil was far from over. Mere hours later, Altman announced plans to join Microsoft, OpenAI’s biggest investor. The power struggle culminated Tuesday with Altman dramatically regaining his position, the board dissolved, and a new slate of directors named.

For Altman, what should have been an entertaining weekend escaping work stresses turned into the fight of his career to salvage his reputation and legacy. The entire saga played out at breakneck speed as OpenAI veered close to catastrophe. In the end, the surprise board coup backfired spectacularly, only serving to undermine OpenAI and consolidate Altman’s authority further.

Sutskever later expressed deep regret over his starring role in Altman’s temporary downfall, admitting the situation could have been handled far better. Nonetheless, the damage was done during those frenetic 72 hours when OpenAI’s future hung in the balance amongst the bright Vegas lights. With lessons learned on all sides, Altman now resumes control, bruised but emboldened. His Formula One weekend turned out to be merely the prelude to the actual high-stakes race for power behind the scenes.
