PC gaming enthusiasts around the world are eagerly anticipating January 8th, when graphics card giant NVIDIA plans to fully reveal details on their new GeForce RTX SUPER line of GPUs at the 2024 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. While the cards themselves won’t go on sale until January 17th, the specs, pricing, and other specifics that will be announced promise to get gamers excited to upgrade their rigs with the latest technology.
NVIDIA has been teasing tidbits about the upcoming SUPER series on social media to build suspense. The new cards will feature boosted speeds, more CUDA cores for improved performance, and additional memory capacity on certain models — all without increasing the energy draw. This achievement will allow the new SUPER GPUs to better compete with rival AMD’s Radeon RX 7000 cards.
The line is expected to consist of three new cards: the RTX 4070 SUPER, RTX 4070 Ti SUPER, and RTX 4080 SUPER. Of the three, the 4080 SUPER is positioned as the highest-powered flagship model. While it retains the 16GB memory of the base RTX 4080, it increases the number of CUDA cores substantially from 9728 up to 10240. This results in more raw computing horsepower. The card also gets a modest speed boost from 22.4Gbps to 23Gbps.
The middle offering in the stack, the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER, makes the biggest leap over its predecessor. It now matches the memory capacity of the 4080 with 16GB, a strong upgrade from the standard 12GB. CUDA cores are also increased by nearly 1000, and the memory bus gets expanded from 192-bit to 256-bit. Impressively, all these improvements happen without increasing its 220W power draw.
On the more affordable end, the RTX 4070 SUPER isn’t getting a memory upgrade but still increases its CUDA cores from 5888 to 7168. Its base clock sees a meaningful 60MHz jump as well. It does, however, move up slightly in TDP from 200W to 220W. With 8GB variants of the 4070 remaining on the market, this 12GB SUPER version promises better future-proofing.
Rumored pricing for this new stack suggests the models may be cheaper at launch than their non-SUPER counterparts originally retailed for. If true, this would intensify competition with AMD’s offerings. The RTX 4070 SUPER is expected to match the $599 MSRP of the base RTX 4070. Between a suspected $799-899 price point, the 4070 Ti SUPER would come in just under the $999 of the standard model. Most surprisingly, leaks point to a $999 cost for the new 4080 SUPER — a whole $200 less than the overwhelmingly panned $1199 MSRP of the vanilla RTX 4080 at launch.
For PC gamers who already splurged on holiday deals for RTX 40 series cards, news of an upgraded SUPER line less than two months later is sure to sting. But many budget-conscious upgraders frustrated with initial pricing and availability struggles will welcome a second chance at scoring these new enhanced GPUs soon after release. With more memory, faster speeds, and greater power efficiency, the GeForce RTX 40 SUPER series looks to address earlier complaints while offering better performance per dollar.
NVIDIA’s CES presentation and Q&A session promises to be a highlight of the entire 4-day consumer tech expo. Gaming enthusiasts are sure to be glued to the livestream for all the details on specifications, pricing, availability dates, and benchmark comparisons as the long-teased SUPER models are fully unveiled at last. With several other major players like AMD, Intel, and leading gaming studios also slated to make announcements, the 2024 event is shaping up to be a gamer’s dream.
