Barbie mania has gripped the world once again. Fresh off the heels of the record-breaking Barbie film in 2023, Mattel has announced an unexpected new product: a vintage-inspired Barbie flip phone.

In partnership with Nokia phone maker HMD Global, the nostalgic cell phone is slated to launch this summer. Promising a “dash of pink and of course, sparkle,” this dumb phone marks a purposeful departure from the internet-connected smartphones of today.

“It’s time to swap reel life for real life and take a breather from all the interruptions of notifications,” said HMD’s Chief Marketing Officer Lars Silberbauer in a statement.

The Barbie phone reflects a growing “dumb phone” trend, especially among Gen Z consumers seeking to limit their digital footprint. Free from apps, social media, and constant pings, such devices provide a minimalist, distraction-free experience.

True to Barbie’s roots, the hot pink phone perfectly mirrors the retro accessory often included with the famous fashion doll. With its flip form factor and T9 keyboard, the phone exudes ‘90s nostalgia.

Beyond aesthetics, the Barbie phone marks a notable shift for HMD Global. The company typically sells Nokia-branded devices, having acquired the rights to the Nokia name in 2016 after Microsoft sold off the brand.

Now, under the new HMD brand name, the company aims to partner with iconic brands to produce phones tailored to them. HMD will continue manufacturing Nokia-branded devices while also acting as a white-label manufacturer for unique devices like the Barbie phone.

The phone’s specs remain unclear, though without internet connectivity, functionality will be limited. Yet for fans craving more Barbie following the smash hit movie, this novelty phone delivers branding galore.

Mattel’s Barbie has long inspired merchandise far beyond just dolls, from apparel to home goods. Now, with her first foray into tech, Barbie is bringing her glamor — and nostalgia — into the digital age.
