In a recent briefing for the financial year ending March 31, 2024, Nintendo‘s president Shuntaro Furukawa unveiled intriguing insights into the company’s forthcoming console, tentatively referred to as the “successor to the Nintendo Switch.”
Amidst growing anticipation, Furukawa shed light on Nintendo’s careful approach to unveiling details about the new device. “At this stage, we cannot say anything more about the successor to Nintendo Switch,” Furukawa explained. “For today’s announcement, we determined that the most appropriate expression to use was ‘successor to Nintendo Switch.’ Information will be released in stages leading up to the launch, as we have done with previous new hardware announcements.”
The announcement arrives against a backdrop of global semiconductor shortages, which have challenged Nintendo’s production capacity for the current Switch model. Despite this, Nintendo expressed confidence in the Switch 2’s manufacturing prospects. Furukawa reassured stakeholders, stating, “We don’t anticipate the same issues affecting the launch of the Switch 2.”
Interestingly, Nintendo’s sales forecast for the financial year does not yet incorporate projections for the Switch 2, underscoring the company’s cautious optimism. However, as preparations advance, this outlook may evolve.
Nintendo’s strategic decision to delay formal confirmation of the Switch 2 was rooted in concerns over its potential impact on current Switch sales. Furukawa acknowledged this, remarking, “We do not think the announcement of the successor to Nintendo Switch and future related communications will have zero impact on Nintendo Switch sales.” Nevertheless, Nintendo aims to navigate this delicate balance to maximize overall sales across both current and future console offerings.
The forthcoming launch of the Switch 2 promises to be a significant milestone for Nintendo enthusiasts, offering a continuation of the beloved Switch experience while embracing new technological advancements.
