Netflix dropping support for second & third-gen Apple TVs

It's finally the end of the line for Apple TV's retro models as Netflix officially cuts them off from streaming service access after July 31, 2024.

For those clinging to their classic Apple TVs, Netflix is about to deliver some unwelcome news. The streaming giant has announced it will be pulling the plug on its app for second and third-generation Apple TV models, effectively ending Netflix on these devices after July 31, 2024.

This decision was communicated through emails to affected subscribers and an update on Netflix’s support page. The company cites a desire to “maintain the best possible Netflix experience” as the reason behind this move.

Let’s face it, the affected Apple TV models are no spring chickens. Launched over a decade ago, these first three generations pre-date the App Store and the tvOS platform entirely. They represent a bygone era of streaming technology, and Netflix is likely making a calculated effort to focus its resources on delivering an optimal experience on more modern devices.

Apple itself considers these older models obsolete, typically ending hardware support for its products seven years after they’ve been discontinued.

While Netflix hasn’t explicitly mentioned the technical limitations of these older devices, it’s reasonable to assume they may struggle to support newer features and functionalities that Netflix is rolling out.

This news might come as a disappointment to a niche group of users who’ve faithfully relied on their old Apple TVs. However, it’s important to remember that technology marches on, and sometimes, even our cherished gadgets reach the end of their lifespan.

For those Netflix subscribers affected by this change, there are a few options to consider. Upgrading to a newer Apple TV model, such as the Apple TV 4K, is an obvious solution. Thankfully, there are currently deals available, at the time of writing, Verizon offering the Apple TV 4K for as low as $89.99.

Alternatively, there are numerous other streaming devices on the market that support Netflix, including Roku, Chromecast, and Amazon Fire TV sticks. These devices offer a variety of features at different price points, allowing users to find a solution that best suits their needs and budget.
