The drama surrounding Microsoft‘s purchase of Activision Blizzard just got another chapter. The US government agency keeping an eye on big business deals, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), isn’t happy about some recent changes to Xbox Game Pass. They’re saying (PDF version) it hurts gamers and goes against what Microsoft promised earlier.
Remember how Microsoft bought Activision Blizzard last year? The FTC tried to block it, worried it’d give Microsoft too much power in the gaming world. Well, the deal went through anyway, but the FTC isn’t done yet.

Here’s what got them riled up:
- No more day one games for new folks: That sweet deal where you got Microsoft’s newest games on Xbox Game Pass the day they came out? Gone for new subscribers on the basic plan. They gotta wait, maybe up to a year, to play those hot titles.
- Price hikes all around: Whether you’re a console or PC gamer, get ready to shell out a few extra bucks for Xbox Game Pass. Yep, both versions are going up in price.
- Broken promises? The FTC says Microsoft promised gamers wouldn’t see price hikes or miss out on new releases with the Activision Blizzard deal. Now, they’re calling foul.
Microsoft isn’t saying much, but it’s easy to see their point. Buying a giant game company like Activision Blizzard isn’t cheap. Maybe they gotta raise prices to keep things going. Plus, they did bump up the price of Xbox Game Pass last year too, before the Activision deal even closed.
This whole mess means gamers might have to pay more and wait longer for new games on Xbox Game Pass. The FTC is trying to convince a court that Microsoft’s acting like a bully now that they’ve got Activision Blizzard under their wing.
