Microsoft is set to revolutionize gaming accessibility with the upcoming launch of its Xbox Adaptive Joystick. Priced at $29.99, this innovative device is designed to cater to players with limited mobility, providing a more inclusive gaming experience.
The Xbox Adaptive Joystick is a wired companion for existing Xbox controllers, featuring four buttons, an Xbox thumbstick, and additional buttons for bumper and trigger controls. Its customizable buttons and 3D printable thumbstick toppers allow players to tailor the controller to their specific needs and preferences.

“From very early on with the adaptive joystick, we had disability community be hands-on with early designs and functional prototypes,” explained Kaitlyn Jones, senior accessibility product manager at Xbox. “Even from a software perspective, we’ve really heard from our players that they’ve wanted an affordable joystick for their adaptive controller, but also something that fits in seamlessly with their existing setup.”
The joystick can be connected to Microsoft’s Adaptive Controller for a fully customized setup or plugged directly into a PC or Xbox. Its threaded insert allows for easy mounting, making it adaptable to various gaming environments.
Community input played a pivotal role in shaping the Adaptive Joystick. Microsoft visited a hospital in Seattle to gather feedback on the grip size, shape, button placement, and overall design. “We got feedback on the grip size, shape, the number of buttons, and where the buttons are located,” said Chris Kujawski, principal designer at Xbox.
In addition to the Adaptive Joystick, Microsoft also announced the Lite SE controller from 8BitDo, another accessibility-focused option. This controller features low-resistance buttons, Hall effect joysticks, and top-mounted buttons for easier access.

Microsoft has also introduced a new toggle hold feature for Xbox controllers, which is currently available for Xbox Insiders to test. This feature aims to assist players who struggle with prolonged button presses by allowing buttons to remain held down until pressed again to release.
The Adaptive Joystick’s packaging has also been improved to enhance accessibility, following the example set by Microsoft’s previous Adaptive Controller. The company is also working to make its new Xbox Series S/X console options more accessible when they launch in October.
The Xbox Adaptive Joystick is scheduled to launch in early 2025 in select Xbox markets worldwide. It will be available exclusively through the Microsoft Store at a price of $29.99.
