Microsoft has just rolled out its highly anticipated Windows 11 2023 Update, which was initially slated to be a major upgrade for the Windows 11 operating system. However, many of the new features expected in the update, such as Windows Copilot, AI enhancements for Paint, Snipping Tool, and Photos, RGB lighting support, and a modernized File Explorer, were actually released ahead of schedule last month. Despite this early release, the primary change introduced by the Windows 11 2023 Update (also known as 23H2) is the removal of the Microsoft Teams integration known as “Chat.”
In this latest update, “Chat” has been replaced by “Microsoft Teams (free),” which is now pinned by default to the taskbar. According to John Cable, the Vice President of Program Management for Windows servicing and delivery, launching Microsoft Teams will provide users with a streamlined communication experience. This new feature allows users to chat, make calls, hold meetings, and create spaces for community groups with just a click or two.
The original Microsoft Teams integration was deeply integrated into the Windows 11 operating system, making it a default fixture in the taskbar. Users couldn’t simply unpin it like most other apps; instead, they had to delve into settings to disable it from the taskbar. Chat was known for being a somewhat confusing part of Windows 11 and was primarily aimed at consumers, rendering it impractical for the vast majority of Microsoft Teams users who rely on the enterprise version of the application.
Furthermore, the Windows 11 2023 Update introduces changes to how apps are managed. Windows 11 system components now sport a “system” label and are categorized into a new section within the settings. This section includes built-in apps like the Microsoft Store, Game Bar, Phone Link, and Tips apps. These changes signal that Microsoft may be gearing up to allow Windows 11 users to uninstall these system components in the near future.
