Microsoft updated its support policies to provide a minimum of six years of firmware and driver updates for Surface devices released from 2021 onward. This expanded commitment aims to extend the usable lifespan of Microsoft’s popular Surface lineup.
Previously, Microsoft guaranteed about four years of support for Surface models. But as reported by Windows Central, Microsoft quietly updated its support documentation to promise six years of updates for over a dozen Surface devices.
Models benefiting from the new six-year pledge include the Surface Pro 7 Plus, Surface Laptop 4, Surface Pro 8, Surface Laptop Studio, and several others released since the start of 2021. For context, Google recently made waves by committing to provide 10 years of update support for newer Chromebook models.
While not matching Google’s decade-long support, an extra two years still provides welcome longevity. And it aligns with growing calls for technology firms to support products longer to reduce e-waste. The policy change comes after Panos Panay, Microsoft’s longtime Surface chief, left for Amazon in September.
